  How does Softener work?

  Reversible ion exchange process over the bed of softening media known as Resin or Zeolite. Typically, the resin is a synthetic or natural, sand-like material coated with positively charged sodium ions.

  When the stream of hard water is passed through the bed of Ion exchange (Sodium ion rich) media - A reversible ion exchange reaction takes place and all the available Ca⁺⁺/ Mg⁺⁺ ions get replaced with Na+ ions, can be expressed as following:
  
  CaCl₂ + 2 ReNa⁺        Re₂Ca + 2 NaCl
  MgSO₄ + 2 ReNa⁺    Re₂Mg + 2 Na₂SO₄
  
  Since there is no presence of calcium & magnesium salts, water gets converted into soft water.
